Craig West ("Westie")

Provincial Coach

Craig started playing hockey at the age of 10 and by the age of 13 he had played his first club match. Craig made the WP U16 side in 2000 and made his club 1st team debut the same year. He found his passion for coaching at the age of 17 and ran the junior section at Bellville Hockey Club whilst in his matric year. He represented the WP U18 Pens side who managed to finish an incredible 5th in the U18 A section in 2002. 2003 saw a change of scenery as Craig left for the UK on a working holiday visa. He was unable to take any of his hockey gear over however it was only a couple of months and he had arranged for everything to be sent over as he had found an astro down the road from where he was working. Craig went on to play for the London University 1st team and for NPL 1st team the following year.

Craig returned to South Africa towards the end of 2005 and soon after decided to concentrate on his coaching. He has been coaching at Bellville Hockey club since 2007, working with both the men’s and ladies sections. He is currently coaching the ladies TC side and has been the Head Coach of the men’s section since 2010. Craig is also coaching the girls 1st team at Tygerberg High School and the U13A girls team at St. Cyprians. In 2011 he was asked to coach the WP U18B girls team who won the U18 B section at IPT and Craig is now the assistant coach for the U18A side as well as the technical advisor / video analyst for both the U18A and U18B teams for 2012. Craig represented the WP Country Districts Team at the 2011 IPT where he was also appointed as the South African Country Districts Men’s Head Coach who are invited to men’s IPT B section every year. This year Craig is fortunate enough to be attending his first USSA tournament with the UCT Men’s 1st team as their video analyst.

Over the past few years Craig has found a strong passion for the technical side of hockey and in 2011 he started to get involved with video analysis for school and club teams. Craig believes this is an aspect of all sports which is growing by the day thanks to modern technology. And to be able to provide coaches with this kind of information on both their players as well as their opposition is another small step towards helping South African hockey grow.
